The Grass is Greener…
14 June 2009
…and is much more healthy when kept between 4-8″ tall! So this means mowing. Mowing, mowing and more mowing during May and June when the grass grows a couple of inches a week. Lots of visitors to the farm wonder why the horses don’t just “mow” the fields. This is a great question, and I have a great answer. There are always weeds, which are really just misplaced plants, growing in the fields, and we don’t want to encourage them, so we mow them to slow their growth. We horses also don’t eat some of the grasses when they get really tall – we like the new tender green shoots, not the dryer tall, seed heads on grass. Emily & Alex use a Kubota tractor with a 5′ Bush Hog mower to tend to the fields. This photo was taken from the tractor seat last week as our beloved Skinny Field was mowed. After mowing the field needs to rest for a couple of days so the moist green cut grass can dry so as not to give grazing horses tummy aches. I’d just eat it all, but I’m not given a chance to do so!

Spring = Lots of Field Mowing
