New Horses, Hot Days
29 July 2009
We have two new friends at Fish Bowl! On Sunday Emily & Alex went to Selah, near Yakima, to pick up Sherman and Buttercup. Sherman is a new school horse, a flea bitten grey who stands 13.3. He is a good jumper, nice on the flat and is very kind. Buttercup is a four year old Connemara who stands 14.1 and is very sweet. She is Inigo’s cousin! Both are from the Spokane area, and we are so glad to have them here on Vashon Island!
It’s been really, really hot lately. We horses do a lot of slow walking around in the cool times of the day (overnight and early mornings), and stay still and in the shade during the hottest parts of the day. Yesterday it was 99º and today is supposed to be about the same. Emily has cancelled all but the first two lessons of the day (8:00 and 9:00 am), as it is just too hot for everyone – humans and horses. Today we’ll all get electrolytes to be sure we’re staying healthy and hydrated. That should be delicious! Horses and heat are a tough combination, and horses and riders and heat are even worse. Read this good article on hot weather and horses for interesting, helpful information. We horses appreciate it when you humans understand the risks of exercise when it’s to hot, especially when we’re not used to it!
